I identify with Eve

Picture the first woman ever created, living in a lush Garden where everything flourished in perfect harmony. The plants thrived, animals frolicked, and birds soared freely. Life was peaceful, simple, and good. Eve was content.

One day, Eve made her way to her special place in the Garden. The Tree of Life always had the best fruit—sweet, refreshing, and absolutely delicious!
On the journey, she encountered a snake who struck up a conversation with her. Words flowed easily between them as they talked about the blessed life in the midst of the Garden. The snake recounted a humorous encounter when he had witnessed Adam playing with a family of chimpanzees, attempting to swing on vines alongside them. Eve chuckled at the snake’s vivid details of the scene. He was such a good storyteller.
As they neared the Tree of Life, the snake suddenly remarked, “Wow! Look at the fruit on that tree!”
Eve turned, her eyes falling on a tree she hadn’t given much thought to before. Its fruit gleamed with the most vibrant colors.
“That red,” the serpent marveled, “it’s the most beautiful shade, isn’t it? Have you ever seen anything like it?”
Eve felt her intrigue grow, curiosity bubbling within her. She realized she had passed this tree countless times, but today, it captured her attention in a way it never had before.
“The woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise...”—Genesis 3:6

We know how the story ends. Eve turned, took, and ate. And in that moment, everything changed.
I identify with Eve, surrounded by the abundant blessings of God, yet still feeling a hunger for “more.” Contentment with what I have often clashes with a longing for what I don’t. My attention is drawn toward things that are “a delight to the eyes” (Genesis 3:6).
The serpent remains just as crafty. As an expert storyteller, he spins a story, gets me laughing and comfortable, while weaving distractions that capture my focus. For me, the enticement comes in the form of a new project, a new friendship, or a new opportunity. A bubbling of excitement stirs within me, and I stop, turn, change course, and shift in its direction.
Perhaps you can relate.
God speaks words of life to me:
As these words soak in, they arise like a spring bubbling with life and movement.

I sit quietly in God’s presence, my heart open to receive. Truth flows through His Spirit and His Word, gently grounding me.
Matthew 5:2-8, And He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the gentle, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
I identify with Eve. I do not judge her or condemn her because I understand the lure—the pull of desire and the delight in seeking something more.
2 Corinthians 11:3 But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his trickery, your minds will be led astray from sincere and pure devotion to Christ."
Eve lived in the perfection of the Garden of Eden, yet she was tempted by “more.” I, too, find myself drawn to things that appear to be a delight to my eyes. In a world abounding with distractions, I choose to focus on Jesus and stay on the path that leads to Life.
I invite you to journey with me - alongside, in community, together.
I ask our good Father to help us see the blessings He has already given. May we live simply, content in His provision.
A Prayer:
Father, You alone are worthy of my full attention. Thank You for what You have given and provided for me. By Your power and Spirit, help me resist the pull toward distractions and the desire for more than what You have placed in this season. Protect me from the evil one and every temptation. I choose to belong to You and love You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. Lead me on the path of Life. Amen.
